Dr. Paul Kores' background |
While in New Guinea, he also continued his studies of orchids, especially terrestrial diurid orchids. His doctoral dissertation at Tulane University was on the evolution and systematics of a member of this group, the Acianthinae. Before completing his doctorate, Dr. Kores also finished a large project on the orchids of Fiji for A. C. Smith's Flora of Fiji. There are over 62 different genera of orchids in Fiji, and over 160 species. That project took more than six years, resulting in two books, and caused his major professor at Tulane, Dr. Steven Darwin, to often wonder whether Paul would ever actually finish his degree. Dr. Kores' research projects have included:
Paul Kores has over thirty published scientific articles, as well as several papers he has published or is still working on with his former graduate students. Over the course of his career, Dr. Kores has taught in a wide variety of environments, which have included, for instance. teaching non-literate New Guineans to operate a misting sytem he built for his rhododendron cuttings, helping an international group of scientists work out DNA sequencing methodologies in London, and teaching regular college classes.
