Chemistry M11
Fall Semester 2009 Chemistry 11 is
designed primarily for allied health science majors. General,
organic, and biological chemistry are studied with an emphasis
placed on medical applications. Topics covered in general chemistry
include the modern view of the atom, molecules, chemical compounds,
reactions, and calculations. Organic and biochemistry topics
include hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, amines,
carboxylic acids and their derivatives, carbohydrates, lipids,
proteins, nucleic acids, and metabolism. This 5-unit course
combines 4 hours of lecture with one 3-hour laboratory session per
week.
Chemistry 11 is not intended for students planning to take Chemistry
M01A. |

Chemistry M01B
Closed Until Taught Summer 2010 Chemistry 1B is a second
semester college level course in general inorganic chemistry
designed for students who have completed Chemistry 1A with
a grade of C or better. Topics include a detailed study of
chemical kinetics, equilibria,
acids and bases, solubility and complex ions, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, qualitative
and quantitative chemical analyses, and an overview of nuclear chemistry,
coordination chemistry and ligand field theory, and organic chemistry.
Laboratory activities supplement lecture topics by addressing
kinetics, equilibria, thermodynamics, spontaneous
oxidation-reduction reactions and electrolysis, selective
precipitation, titrations, and exposure to ultraviolet, infrared,
and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This 6-unit course
combines 5 hours of lecture with one 3-hour laboratory session per
week. Successful completion of Chemistry 1B is required to
enroll in Organic Chemistry. |
