Course Syllabus

Course Description:
NTS MO1 Nutrition 3 units. Examines nutrition science as it relates to human physiology, microbiology, biochemistry and the psychology of wellness.  Explores nutrient requirements throughout the lifecycle as influenced by social, cultural, economic and environmental conditions

Objectives:
Understand the role nutrition plays in health and fitness. Compare and contrast the nutrition standards (Food Guide Pyramid, Recommended Dietary Allowances [RDA], and Dietary Guidelines for Americans) as they guide personal food choices. Compare and contrast the diets for disease prevention (e.g., from hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes).

Textbook:
Nutrition Concepts & Controversies 10th edition, by Frances Sizer and Eleanor Whitney. West/Wadsworth, Belmont CA, 2006.

Required Materials:

  1. Hand calculator for use in class.

  2. Access to a computer (home, work or the college library) to complete the “Nutrient Analysis” in the “Diet Analysis Plus” software available in the bookstore,  $25.

  3. Scantrons: 4 Form “882”

Grading:

  1. 300 points-three 100-pint midterms will be given in class.  Missed tests result in “0” points.  No make-up tests will be given.   Note: Information from the book, discussed in class and guest speakers may be included on all exams.

  2. 200 points-comprehensive final

  3. 100 points-Nutrient Analysis.  A three-day food diary and analysis must be completed to pass this class even if turned in for zero points.  Subtract 50 points for each class date the assignment is late

  4. Other assignments may vary depending on instructor

  5. Grading scale: A (90-100%) B(80-89%)  C(70-79%)  D(60-69%)  F(below 60%)

  6. There may be extra credit opportunities.

Attendance:  Students that miss more than 2 classes will be dropped.  For each day missed after last day to drop 25 points will be subtracted.
