Nutrition/Fitness/Stress Management 
Course Syllabus

Course Description:
HED M03 (3 units).  This is an integrated approach to good HEALTH and physical FITNESS through the study of basic principles of exercise, nutrition & human behavior.  Current approaches for weight control, heart health and stress management will be analyzed.  Skills for incorporating HABITS and techniques into one's daily life will be stressed.

Objectives:
Students will be able to:

  1. "Collect" current & accurate information on fitness, nutrition & stress management.
  2. "Assess" personal physical fitness, nutritional & stress status.
  3. "Prepare" a plan of action to measure personal success in each area: fitness, nutrition and stress.
  4. "Enjoy" the benefits of applying personal goals.

Textbook:  

  1. Fit & Well, 6th ed., by Fahey, Insel & Roth. McGraw Hill,  ISBN #:0-07-284422-1

  2. Diet Analysis Plus, CD-Rom available in bookstore. Must have access to a computer (at home, work, or the college library) to complete the Nutrient Analysis assignment.

Required Materials:

  1. SCANTRONS: 3 Form “882”(regular 100 pts) and 1 Form “884 ES” (large, 200 pts)

Grading:

  1. 60 points- lab reports.  15 points each time they are turned in (on exam dates).  Complete all lab reports at the end of each chapter, and turn in the day of each exam.
  2. 225 points - three 75 point midterms will be given in class.  Missed tests result in "0" points.  No make-up tests will be given (you may arrange to take a midterm before the scheduled date if necessary).
  3. 50 points - Nutrient Analysis.  A three day food diary and analysis must be completed to pass this class, even if handed in late enough to receive a 0.
  4. 50 points - 2 critical thinking assignments.  These are like a pop quiz.  You must be in class the day the assignment is provided.
  5. 10 points - special assignment to be announced in class.
  6. 10 points - taste test. Bring a heart healthy food for the class to taste.
  7. 150 points - comprehensive final. 
  8. Grading Scale: A(90-100%)   B(80-89%)   C(70-79%)   D(60-69%) F (below 60%) 
  9. Total possible points: 555.   (32% assignments,  67% exams)
