Netiquette

In addition to what is below, I would like all your external (i.e., outside of WebCT) emails to me to contain the following:

If your email does not have this information I will most likely reply by asking who you are.  This will delay my response to you.

In general I expect that we all treat each other with courtesy and respect.  I do not expect it, but in other courses with other instructors some people have resorted to name-calling, profanity, various personal slurs, etc.  I have a very low tolerance for this, as I am sure we all do.  In the unlikely event something occurs I will feel free to take such action as I deem necessary to correct the situation.

Netiquette:

"Netiquette" is network etiquette, the do's and don'ts of online communication. Netiquette covers both common courtesy online and the informal "rules of the road" of cyberspace. Students are expected to practice netiquette. The core rules of Netiquette are:

  1. Remember the Human - Do unto others as you'd have others do unto you. Imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes. Stand up for yourself, but try not to hurt people's feelings.
  2. Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life - be ethical, breaking the law is bad netiquette
  3. Know where you are in cyberspace - Lurk before you leap. What's perfectly acceptable in one area may be dreadfully rude in another.
  4. Respect other people's time and bandwidth
  5. Make yourself look good online
  6. Share expert knowledge - Don't be afraid to share what you know.
  7. Help keep flame wars under control
  8. Respect other people's privacy
  9. Don't abuse your power
  10. Be forgiving of other people's mistakes
