This course is designed to provide an overview of grammar and punctuation. It is for those who need to review or relearn the rules of English as used in business. A textbook is required and there are suggested supplements:

  • Text: Business English, by Mary Ellen Guffey; Southwestern College Publishing. (Most current edition required... if unsure email me 1st!)

  • Supplements: A recent college-level dictionary (Merriam-Webster or American Heritage) and a well-rated reference manual. (suggested)
See text for additional information. *

*After you registerPlease email me so I may send you additional information.
Ask any questions you have and I will answer them.

I suggest you buy the text first; then read Chapter 1 before purchasing any other resources. The text author provides online and CD-Rom options for some additional resources which we will discuss online.

This is a review course, but I do not expect students to be a step away from expertise in the topics we cover. I understand that many students who are expert in many other fields may not be expert in English usage and have been practicing misunderstandings for many years. Unlearning those mistakes takes time and help from your instructor. That help is available online.

This is a business class although the subject is English. Business writing requires clear, concise messages that the reader can understand quickly. In today's global economy business writers may be communicating with colleagues and customers anywhere in the world.

English is the main language used in business globally. The rule for communicating is to keep it short and simple. Although most people in other countries and in the U.S. have studied English, long sentences and complicated dialogue can be very confusing and hard to read.

The 20-Second Rule. With companies finding it very hard to fill open positions, most employees are trying to fill more than one job. Few people have more than 20 seconds to spend reading an e-mail, letter, or memo.

Assignments will focus on

    • learning the rules for grammar and punctuation

    • for correct spelling and word usage (i.e. lie and lay).

    • additional short writing and/or editing exercises to complete

*This Business English M28 course is taught online. You register exactly the same way as you do for on-campus classes:

    On campus: in Administration,

On the web: through WebStar, or by phone.

However, you "attend"  the class through your home or work computer or you can use one on campus in the open computer lab.
