Primary Sources - The Online Library Catalog

The library has been adding a number of reference books to meet the needs of assignments that require the use of primary sources. To find primary sources in the library catalog:

1. Search for "primary sources" as a keyword in the library catalog. You will get a listing of several sources that contain primary source materials.

2. Use the following terms or subheadings in your search for a general topic: letters, correspondence, diaries, interviews, personal narratives, sources. Combine one of these keywords with your topic. For example:

-- Civil War personal narratives
-- Vietnam war personal narratives

Don't be discouraged if you cannot locate some primary documents on your topic. Ask the librarian to direct you to appropriate sources and to give you more suggestions.

3. Look for speeches.

4. Search for movies from a specific time period, works of fiction, videos, short stories, plays, audiotapes, photographs.

5. Ask the librarian for help.
