Newspapers

Newspapers

Newspapers provide articles about current events and are a good source of local, national and international news and information.

Newspapers, like journals and magazines, are called "periodicals" because they are published regularly--for example, daily or weekly.

Use a newspaper

  • to find current information about international, national and local events
  • to find editorials, commentaries, expert or popular opinions
  • To find topics of popular culture
  • To find analysis of controversial issues

Examples

  • Wall Street Journal
  • New York Times
  • Los Angeles Times
  • Christian Science Monitor
  • Washington Post
  • Ventura County Star

You can find newspapers in print or microfilm format, in online databases, or on the Web as electronic newspapers. Most newspapers are made available to you by subscriptions purchased by your Library. Many newspapers have their own Web sites and provide articles featuring today's news for free, and sometimes may provide earlier, popular articles for a fee.

At Moorpark College Library, you will find current copies of local newspapers kept for one month behind the Circulation Desk. The Moorpark Star, for example, is on the web at http://venturacountystar.com. An excellent database to find regional, national and international news is ProQuest National Newspapers. Other general databases such as eLibrary and InfoTrac OneFile include newspapers in addition to magazines, journals and books.
