Biotechnology Biotechnologists
use
living
cells

Chemistry
is the study of the composition
of matter and its properties
such as density, acidity, size and shape. Chemists carefully describe
the properties they study
in terms of quantities, with detail on the level of molecules
and their component atoms.
Chemists carefully measure substance proportions, reaction
rates, and other chemical properties.Chemists use this knowledge to
learn the composition, and properties
of unfamiliar substances, as well as to reproduce and synthesize large
quantities of useful naturally occurring substances and create new
artificial substances and useful processes. Chemists may specialize in
any number of sub-disciplines of chemistry. Materials scientists and
metallurgists share much of the same education and
skills with chemists. Chemical engineers are concerned
with the physical processes necessary to carry out industrial reactions
(heating, cooling, mixing, diffusion, etc.) and to separate and purify
the products and work with industrial chemists on the development of
new processes.

Earth
Sciences is also
known as geosciences and is an all-embracing term for
the sciences related
to the planet Earth. There are four
major disciplines in earth sciences, namely geography, geology,
geophysics and geodesy. These majors use the disciplines of physics,
chemistry, biology, chronology and mathematics to build a quantitative
understanding of the principal areas or spheres of the Earth system.
Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Meteorology,
Paleontology, Water Science/Hydrology, etc. are often
found in earth sciences directories.

Engineering
is the discipline, art and profession of acquiring and applying
technical, scientific and mathematical knowledge to design and
implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and
processes that safely realize a desired objective or inventions. The
American Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD) defined
engineering as "the creative application of scientific principles to
design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing
processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to
construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or
to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as
respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to
life and property.” In 1980 the ECPD evolved into the
Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) to more
accurately describe its emphasis on accreditation.
Environmental
Science
is
an
interdisciplinary
field
that involves both the physical
sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, geology, geography, resource
technology and engineering) and the social sciences (resource
management and conservation, demography, economics, politics and
ethics). It encompasses
the
surrounding conditions that affect man and other organisms. Natural and
human resources are interdependent and the use or misuse of one affects
the other. Please meet with a social sciences counselor if your
interest in environmental science comes under that category. Meet with

field of the environment is in science or engineering.

departments. They collect and test physical evidence, such as fiber,

Geography
is
an
all-encompassing
discipline
that
foremost
seeks
to
understand
the
Earth
and
all
of
its
human and natural complexities—not merely “where” objects are,
but how
they have changed, come to be, and/or continue to interact. Geographic scale (from micro to global) is an
important consideration because spatial relationships depend on the
size of the
area under considered. As a “bridge” discipline
between the human and environmental
phenomenon, geography is divided into two subfields: human geography
and physical
geography. The former focuses largely on the built environment and how
space is
created, viewed and managed by humans.The latter is further divided into Climatology
(study of earth’s climate), Biogeography (the distribution of living
organisms)
and Geomorphology (the surface expression of the land).
Mathematics is the study of
science and of quantity, structure, space and change.
Mathematicians seek out patterns,
formulate new conjectures and establish truth by rigorous deduction
from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. There is debate over
whether mathematical objects such as numbers and points exist naturally
or are human creations. The mathematician Benjamin Peirce called
mathematics "the science that draws necessary conclusions".
Albert Einstein, on the other hand, stated that "as far as the laws of
mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they
are certain, they do not refer to reality. "Through the use of
abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics evolved from counting,
calculation, measurement, and the systematic study of the shapes and
motions of physical objects. Practical mathematics has been a human
activity for as far back as written records exist. Rigorous arguments
first appeared in Greek mathematics, most notably in Euclid's Elements.
Mathematics continued to develop, in fitful bursts, until the
Renaissance, when mathematical innovations interacted with new
scientific discoveries, leading to an acceleration in research that
continues to the present day.Today, mathematics is used throughout the
world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science,
engineering, medicine, and the social science. Applied mathematics, the
branch of mathematics
concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields,
inspires and makes use of new mathematical discoveries and sometimes
leads to the development of entirely new disciplines. Mathematicians
also engage in pure mathematics, or mathematics for its own sake,
without having any application in mind, although practical applications
for what began as pure mathematics are often discovered later.

Nanotechnologists
study the
control of matter on an atomic and
molecular
scale. Generally nanotechnology deals with structures of the size 100
nanometers or smaller and involves developing materials or devices
within that size. Nanotechnology is very diverse, ranging from
extensions of conventional device physics to completely new approaches
based upon molecular self-assembly, from developing new materials with
dimensions on the nanoscale to investigating whether we can directly
control matter on the atomic scale.
Nanotechnology has the potential to
create many new materials and devices with a vast range of
applications, such as in medicine, electronics and energy production.

Physics is the study of
matter and its motion through spacetime and all
that derives from these, such as energy and force. More broadly, it is the general analysis
of nature, conducted in order to understand how the world and universe
behave. Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines, perhaps the
oldest through its inclusion of astronomy. Over the last two millennia, physics had
been considered synonymous with philosophy, chemistry, and certain
branches of mathematics and biology, but during the Scientific
Revolution in the 16th century, it emerged to become a unique modern
science in its own right. However, in some subject areas such as in
mathematical physics and quantum chemistry, the boundaries of physics
remain difficult to distinguish. Physics is both significant and
influential, in part because advances in its understanding have often
translated into new technologies, but also because new ideas in physics
often resonate with the other sciences, mathematics and philosophy. For
example, advances in the understanding of electromagnetism or nuclear
physics led directly to the development of new products which have
dramatically transformed modern-day society (e.g., television,
computers, and domestic appliances); advances in thermodynamics led to
the development of motorized transport; and advances in mechanics

Doctors
of Dentistry diagnose, prevent,

treat problems of
the teeth and tissues of the mouth. They remove decay and fill
cavities, examine X-rays, place protective plastic sealant on

dentists are general practitioners and other dentists practice in one
of eight specialty areas. Orthodontists, the largest group of

Nutritionists
are
highly
qualified
professionals who are nationally recognized as experts on food and
nutrition
and can be found in a variety of settings. Management dietitians work
in health care institutions, schools, cafeterias, and restaurants. They
are responsible for personnel management, menu planning, budgeting, and
purchasing. Clinical
dietitians are a vital part of the medical team in
hospitals, nursing homes, health maintenance organizations and other
health care facilities. They work with doctors, nurses, and therapists
to help speed patients recovery and lay the groundwork for long term
health. Opportunities for advancement are available by choosing a
particular area of nutrition, such as diabetes, heart or pediatrics.
Community dietitians
work in public and home health agencies, daycare
centers, health and recreations clubs and in government-funded
programs that feed and counsel families, the elderly, pregnant women,
children, disabled and underprivileged individuals. Wherever proper
nutrition can help improve quality of life, they reach out to the
public to teach, monitor and advise. Educator dietitians work
in
colleges, universities and community or technical schools, teaching
future doctors, nurses, dietitians and dietetic technicians the

Holistic
medicine
is
the
art and science of healing that addresses care of the
whole person - body, mind, and spirit. The practice of holistic
medicine integrates conventional and complementary therapies to promote
optimal health and prevent and treat disease by addressing
contributing factors. In practice, this means that each person is seen
as a unique individual, rather than an example of a particular disease.
Disease is understood to be the result of physical, emotional,
spiritual, social and environmental imbalance. Healing, therefore,
takes place naturally when these aspects of life are brought into
proper balance. The role of the practitioner is as guide, mentor and
role model; the patient must do the work - changing lifestyle, beliefs
and old habits in order to facilitate healing. All appropriate methods
may be used, from medication to meditation.

Oriental Medicine is a range of
medical practices that
usually originate in China.
Although well accepted in the mainstream of medical care throughout
East Asia, it is considered an alternative medical system in much of
the Western world. A licensed practitioner is known as O.D., Doctor of
Oriental Medicine.
The practice includes such treatments as herbal
medicine, acupunture, dietary therapy, massage and Qi Gong.
Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND,
or in Arizona also Naturopathic
Medical Doctor, or NMD), in sixteen U.S. States and six Canadian
provinces, refers exclusively to an alternative medicine degree granted
by an accredited naturopathic medical school. Naturopathic medicine is
a complementary and alternative medicine which
emphasizes the body's intrinsic ability to heal and maintain itself.
Naturopaths prefer to use natural remedies such as herbs and foods
rather than surgery or synthetic drugs. Naturopathic practice includes
many different modalities. Practitioners emphasize a holistic approach
to patient care and may recommend patients use conventional medicine
alongside their treatments.

Nurse (RN) in
collaboration with other members of a health care team, is
responsible for: treatment, safety, and recovery of acutely or
chronically ill individuals; health promotion and maintenance within
families, communities and populations; and, treatment of
life-threatening emergencies in a wide range of health care settings.
Nurses perform a wide range of clinical and non-clinical functions
necessary to the delivery of health care and may also be involved in
medical and nursing research.

Occupational
Therapists help patients with work and leisure activities to
promote health by helping people find ways to adapt their lives.
Occupational therapists use careful analysis of physical,
environmental, psychosocial, mental, spiritual, political and cultural
factors to identify barriers to occupation. The primary goal of an
Occupational therapist is to enable individuals, groups and communities
to participate in actitivies which are meaningful to them, reflect
their beliefs and values and produce a sense of accomplishment or
satisfaction. Occupational therapy has been described as addressing the
"skills for the job of living" necessary for "living life to its
fullest."
Occupational therapy draws from the fields of medicine, psychology,
sociology, anthropology, ethnography, architecture and many other
disciplines in developing its knowledge base.
In their
traditional
role, pharmacists (Pharm.D) typically take a request for medicine from
a
prescribing health care provider who is usually a medical doctor in the
form of a medical prescription, evaluate the appropriateness of the
prescription, dispense the medication to the patient and counsel them

Physician Assistants (PA) are
licensed to practice medicine
under the supervision of a licensed physician.
A physician assistant is concerned with preventing, maintaining, and
treating human illness and injury by providing a broad range of health
care services that are traditionally performed by a physician. PAs
conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and
interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery,
and write prescriptions. They exercise autonomy in medical decision
making as determined by their supervising physician. Physician
assistants are educated in the medical model designed to complement
physician training.
Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM),
also known as podiatrist and
podiatric physician or surgeon, are
qualified by their education and training to diagnose and treat
conditions affecting the foot, ankle and related structures of the leg.
Sports medicine specializes in
preventing, diagnosing and
treating injuries related to participating in sports or exercise,
specifically the rotation or deformation of joints or muscles caused by
engaging in such physical activities. There are different avenues to
the practice which include Medical School, Physical Therapy School,
Athletic Training, Chiropratic Medicine, and Kinesiology.
